Puerto Rico is seeking to expand labor rights for private-sector employees under a law signed June 20 by Gov. Pedro Pierluisi (New Progressive).
Law 41-2022 (Spanish) is scheduled to go into effect on July 20, but the Financial Oversight and Management Board of Puerto Rico said in a June 13 statement that it plans to bar the law’s enactment, implementation, and enforcement. Pierluisi disagreed with the board’s statement in a June 30 response, but the board has the ability to block any laws that are inconsistent with the board’s efforts to establish fiscal solvency.
